Colorado Hail Damage Repair

The question almost every Colorado driver asks first is whether the car is about to be written off. The answer depends on a rule that is different in every state, and Colorado’s is one of the ones most often reported wrongly. So start there.

Colorado has no percentage threshold at all

C.R.S. 42-6-102(17)(a)(I)

A vehicle becomes a “salvage vehicle” in Colorado when the insurer determines it to be a total loss, or when the cost of repairing it to a roadworthy condition exceeds the vehicle’s retail fair market value immediately before the damage.

Read that again, because it is more generous than almost anywhere else. There is no 70%, no 75%, no 80%. The repair has to cost more than the entire car was worth. Colorado and Texas are the only two states that effectively set the line at 100 percent of value.

For a hail claim specifically, that is a very high bar to clear. Hail damages panels; it does not usually touch the engine, the transmission, the frame or the airbags, which is where the money is in a wreck. A car with two hundred dents and no broken glass is a long way from costing more to fix than it is worth.

The statute also carves out exclusions, so the rule does not reach every vehicle: collector’s items, horseless carriages, and street rod vehicles that qualified under article 12 at the time of the damage, plus off-highway vehicles.

What the record actually shows in Colorado

8 May 2017 — Metro Denver, and the western suburbs

The costliest insured catastrophe in Colorado history. Baseball-sized hail crossed metro Denver and the western suburbs, with the largest documented stone measured at 2.75 inches in Edgewater. The Rocky Mountain Insurance Association put the insured damage at roughly $2.3 billion, from more than 150,000 auto insurance claims and 50,000 homeowner claims.

The 2017 Denver storm produced three times as many auto claims as homeowner claims. Hail is a vehicle problem here first, and cars are the thing most often parked outdoors when it arrives.

Front Range storms build against the mountains and move east onto the plains, which is why the damage concentrates along the urban corridor rather than spreading evenly across the state.

What paintless repair does to the number

Every total-loss decision is the same arithmetic: the cost to repair against what the vehicle was worth before the damage. The lever a driver actually controls is the first half of that.

A conventional hail repair prices in panel replacement, sanding, filler, primer and a repaint, plus the blending into adjacent panels that a colour match needs. Paintless dent repair removes all of it. A technician works each dent back from behind the panel with the original finish untouched, so there is no paint, no filler and no replaced metal in the estimate. On a car whose only damage is dents with the paint intact, that is frequently the difference between a repair and a write-off — and it is also why the factory paint stays on the car, which is what a private buyer and a dealer appraiser both check first.

Which method a panel needs is not a matter of preference. Where a stone broke the paint, that panel needs conventional work. An honest estimate says which panels fall into which category instead of quoting one method for the whole vehicle.

How American Hail Network works in Colorado

American Hail Network is a national matching service, not a repair shop. We take the details of your vehicle and your damage, route you to a vetted local paintless dent repair shop, and perform no repairs ourselves. The estimate and the work come from that shop, which is who you deal with and who warranties the repair.

We are onboarding shops in Colorado rather than fully live here, and we would rather say so than imply a bay is waiting. Submit the estimate request and you will get a straight answer about whether we can route it locally right now. If we cannot, we will tell you that instead of taking your details and going quiet.

There is no phone number on this page on purpose. A driver gets routed to a shop; there is no call centre in the middle of it.

Colorado hail questions

At what point is my car totaled in Colorado?

When the repair would cost more than the car was worth before the damage, or when your insurer declares it a total loss. Colorado sets no percentage in statute, unlike Kansas at 75% or Missouri at 80%. For hail specifically that is a high bar, because hail damages panels rather than the drivetrain, the frame or the airbags.

Does a hail claim give my car a salvage title in Colorado?

Only if it meets the salvage definition in C.R.S. 42-6-102, which means the repair cost exceeding the vehicle's pre-damage retail fair market value or the insurer calling it a total loss. A repaired hail car that never met that bar keeps its clean title.

Will paintless dent repair keep me under the line?

It helps, and in Colorado it usually settles the question. Paintless repair removes the panel replacement, the sanding, the filler and the repaint that make up most of a conventional hail estimate. A lower estimate against a 100-percent-of-value bar is not a close call in most cases. You need the actual figure to know, which is what a free estimate gives you.

Does American Hail Network repair my car itself?

No, and it matters that you know that up front. AHN is a matching service. We route drivers with hail-damaged vehicles to a vetted local paintless dent repair shop and perform no repairs ourselves. The estimate and the work come from that shop.

My car was hit in the 2017 storm and never fixed. Too late?

For the repair, no. Hail dents do not settle or fade, and paintless work behaves the same on old damage as new provided the paint was never broken. For the claim it depends on your policy's notice provisions, which is worth a call to your insurer. The bigger risk in a state like this one is a second storm landing on unrepaired damage, because an adjuster who can see pre-existing dents can pay less on the new claim.
