How to File a Hail Damage Insurance Claim in Iowa

A step-by-step script for filing your hail claim: what to say, what to send, what not to sign, and why hail is not an at-fault claim.

The short version: open your carrier's app or call its claims line, say you are filing a comprehensive claim for hail damage, give the storm date and the city, and do not hang up without a claim number. Hail is a comprehensive claim, not an at-fault one. Five minutes of prep makes the call go faster, and the script below works with every major Iowa carrier.

Before You Call: 5-Minute Prep

Adjusters are trained to ask specific questions and look for inconsistencies. Have these ready before you pick up the phone:

  • Your policy number (top right of your insurance card or app)
  • Date and approximate time of the hailstorm
  • City + ZIP code where the damage happened
  • 5-10 phone photos of the damage from different angles
  • Year, make, and model of your vehicle
  • Whether you've already chosen a repair shop (you don't have to, but if you have, tell them, since they may have to approve it)

With those in hand, the only thing left to decide is what to say.

The Universal Hail Claim Script

This works for almost every major carrier in Iowa. Adjust the carrier name as needed.

"Hi, I need to file a comprehensive claim for hail damage on my [year/make/model]. The hailstorm hit on [date] in [city, Iowa]. I have my policy number and photos ready. I'd also like to use a paintless dent repair shop. Can you give me a claim number and tell me what photos or documentation you need from me to process this fast?"

Three things make that script work:

  • "Comprehensive claim for hail damage" tells them exactly the coverage type, no confusion
  • "Paintless dent repair shop" tells the adjuster you know the repair method you want
  • "Claim number" upfront gets you on the books, locks the date, and prevents delays

Your deductible is set by your policy. It works the same whichever shop you pick, so ask your carrier what yours is before the estimate, not after.

Carrier-Specific Notes for Iowa Drivers

State Farm

File online or call 800-732-5246. Mention "Select Service" if your shop is in their network.

Geico

File via the Geico mobile app, the fastest path. Ask whether they will inspect the car virtually or send an adjuster, and when.

Progressive

File via the Progressive app or 1-800-776-4737. Their "Network Shop" program sometimes pushes you toward a specific body shop. Push back if you want PDR: you can choose any shop in Iowa for hail damage repair.

Allstate

Call 1-800-255-7828 or file via the Allstate app. Allstate's Good Hands Repair Network lets you pick your shop.

Farm Bureau (Iowa)

Iowa Farm Bureau is huge here. Call your local agent directly, which is faster than the 800 number. Hail is a known and frequent claim type, and they process these quickly during storm season.

USAA

Military, veterans, and family. File via app or call 1-800-531-8722.

Nationwide

Call 1-877-669-6877 or use the Nationwide Express app. Pre-approve your PDR shop on the call so the work order goes direct.

Liberty Mutual

File via app or 1-800-225-2467. Hail damage is a comprehensive claim, with low resistance once you've provided photos.

American Family

Iowa is core territory for AmFam. Call 1-800-MYAMFAM or your local agent. PDR-friendly, fast processing.

Travelers

File via the Travelers MyAccount app or 1-800-252-4633. They prefer their "ConciergeCLAIM Centers" but you can opt out and use your own shop.

Whichever carrier you have, the next question is what happens if they say no.

What If My Claim Is Denied?

Rare but it happens. Three reasons it could be:

  • You don't have comprehensive coverage (only liability), so hail wouldn't be covered.
  • The damage is older than your policy
  • The adjuster classifies it as wear-and-tear, not storm damage

If denied: request a written denial letter, then ask about a re-inspection or an independent appraisal. A PDR shop can also provide a third-party damage assessment to support the appeal.

Your Next Step

Get the claim number first. Then book a free in-person estimate: tell us about the damage, we match you with a vetted local PDR shop, and the shop takes it from your claim number. You don't have to chase adjusters or re-explain the damage to anyone.
